Chapter Twelve

"Does the will say anything about flogging them?" I asked, perhaps a little too eagerly.

He smiled. "No. And I cannot discuss any of the details. All will be revealed in due time.”

The funeral was tomorrow, which meant that afterwards the clan would be braying and whinnying until the will was read. I was going to steer well clear of them, although it might have been nice to be a little black fly on the wall with a video camera.

"Olga requested that you be there for the reading of her will," Kyrios Psaris continued.

I looked up, surprised. "But I'm not family."

“So what? I think you will find it is in your best interest to be there. 4:00 P.M. at my old office.”

I blinked, still not really comprehending. Surely I couldn't be entitled to anything Olga Marouli owned. Perhaps she wanted to give a me some small token to remember her by, like a sweater or knitting needles.

"I'll be there."

Leo leaned forward with the thoughtful expression on his face again. Obviously he still had some questions. "To your knowledge, did Olga Marouli have any enemies?"

Stavros leaned back and closed his eyes for a moment. "She had a sharp tongue so it is possible she offended somebody. But enemies? No."

"How well do you know Eleni Kefala?" I asked, thinking she was one of the few blondes in Kyria Olga’s extended circle.

This time the old man chuckled. "I saw you there this morning but I didn't want to intrude on whatever you had going with Sofia. Eleni is a good woman. Not warm, but good. She and my boy were a couple, many years ago. Irini and I hoped that they would be married when he came back, but it was not meant to be. She still checks in on me now and again."

“I spoke to her mother yesterday. Does she have memory problems?”

“Memory problems?"

I explained how she’d faded out during our conversation at the knitting circle.

He looked shocked. ”I had no idea. Kalliope has always been spirited woman. She and Olga have been subtle rivals for years with their crafts. And in the bingo hall."

"She plays bingo too?"

He grinned. “You should have seen her face whenever Olga won the big prizes."

"Sounds like she was always coming second place," I said.

“I think they both thrived on their competition. I doubt either of them would have had it any other way." His chuckle gave way to a lung-busting cough.

Leo stood. ”We should get going."

I waited until the older man stopped coughing. "You'll be at the funeral tomorrow?"

Kyrios Stavros cleared his throat and wiped tears from his eyes with a large blue handkerchief—the manly type with a broad stripe around the edges. “I will be there. There is to be no wake, I understand. Olga wanted it that way.”

“Her children wanted a wake, and they wanted to have it at my place.”

“What?”

“You know Athena,” I said. “She hasn’t mentioned it since I just about popped a major blood vessel.”

“That woman …” He shook his head. “I will see you tomorrow.
